Archos Safe-T Mini Review and Setup Guide

The Safe-T mini is the new hardware wallet by Archos, introduced to the crypto world on July 2018. This is the first hardware wallet released by the French tech company which has assigned the hardware manufacturing process to a partner based in Verquin in the north of France. Archos is aiming to compete with the likes of Ledger Nano S, Trezor, Keepkey, and Coolkey, offering an affordable and secure solution to cryptocurrency holders.

We had the opportunity to use a brand new Archos Safe-T mini and have prepared a review and setup guide for you.

Why do I need a hardware wallet?

As any seasoned cryptocurrency trader or investor will tell you, transacting with and storing digital currencies can make your funds vulnerable to bad actors. It is your responsibility to store your cryptocurrencies safely and always remember that your wallet is only as safe as your keys, passwords, seeds, etc. The two safest ways to keep your crypto funds away from the “ill-intending” are of course hardware wallets and paper wallets. Paper wallets require a lot of maintenance and for anyone storing more than a couple cryptocurrencies, a hardware wallet will always be more practical. Hardware wallets allow you to keep your private key offline and away from prying eyes, even if your computer or connection are compromised.

Archos Safe-T Mini Review

The ARCHOS Safe-T Mini is compatible with more than 75% of the market’s cryptocurrencies (including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, ERC20 tokens). New coins are added regularly and Archos is aiming to provide wallet support for as many cryptocurrencies as possible. Unfortunately, for the time being, the Safe-T mini is lacking support for XRP and a couple of other popular coins including NMC and Dogecoin.

Safety is the main concern when selecting a hardware wallet to store your digital currencies and apps on. The Archos Safe-T mini features offline private key storage using an encrypted chipset memory (Crypto memory). A secured EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) secures the contents and can only be erased and reprogrammed using a pulsed voltage, making the device extremely secure against attacks. The Safe-T mini is built on the recognized and tested Trezor software.

Its small and light design will be appreciated by many users, and the polycarbonate body will likely protect the device from small drops. The Archos Safe-T mini features an OLED display with a resolution of 128 x 64 pixels, allowing the user to view information regarding the transactions made, with ease. Some users may be concerned with the lack of protection for the screen, although the device does arrive with a handy pouch and wrist strap to help keep it safe.  The Safe-T mini has two buttons which allow the user to activate and carry out any actions required on the device itself, easily.

Getting started with your Safe-T mini is a quick and painless process, made easier with the clear messages on both the device and Archos setup page which appear during every step of the way. See the setup guide below for more information. Always check that you have accessed the Safe-T mini website through the correct link ( to avoid scam sites and phishing schemes.

The Safe-T mini is one of the most affordable options when it comes to hardware wallets, offered at €49,99 / £49,99 / $59,99 by Archos on their online shop here.

Setup Guide

Once you have unboxed your Safe-T Mini, connect it to your computer using the Mico-USB to USB cable available. The device will be activated and a prompt on the screen will instruct you to navigate to the following url: . This will initiate the setup process shown below.

Step 1  – Download and install bridge software by selecting your platform and clicking the Download Latest Bridge button.

Step 2 – Select the destination folder for the installation and click install.

Step 3 – Reconnect the device using the Micro-USB cable.

Step 4 – Your Safe-T mini comes with a preloaded firmware that allows for the setup process to begin, however, you will have to download and install the latest firmware version before you can start using it. Click the install firmware button to proceed.

Step 5 – During the firmware update, you will be required to unplug and reconnect your Safe-T mini. ACID

Step 6 – Your Safe-T mini is now connected successfully and you can begin creating new wallets to transfer your digital assets to.

Step 7 – Before adding your first wallet you will be guided through a configuration process.

Step 8 – Your recovery seed is the only backup key to all your cryptocurrencies and applications linked to the Safe-T mini. Maintaining a safe backup of your seed is your responsibility. With the Safe-T mini, you will get 3 numbered seed backup cards that you can complete with the recovery seed word sequence. Storing these three cards in separate, safe locations is crucial. As Archos will remind you during the process: taking photos of your recovery seed, writing it in your computer, saving it on cloud storage, and uploading it on the internet are all very bad practices that should be avoided at all cost.

During this process, you will see the sequence of 24 different words appear one at a time on the display of your Safe-T mini. Keep a record of each one on the seed backup cards. Your Safe-T mini will show you each word, once more in the same sequence once you are done writing them down, allowing you to confirm the recovery seed.

Step 9 – Choose a name for your new device. This will help you recognize your device when connecting it to a computer.

Step 10 – Choose a pin for your Safe-T mini. The maximum length for your pin is 6 digits from 1-9 which will appear on the display of the Safe-T mini in random order on a 3×3 grid. You will have to select the spot of the number you want on the setup page by cross-referencing it with the Safe-T mini display.

Your Safe-T mini is ready to go!

To set up new wallets and carry out transactions, visit and connect your Safe-T mini.

Using your Safe-T mini will require you to remember your pin code, so memorize it as quickly as possible and bear in mind that entering it incorrectly 4 times will de-activate the device. To restore access to your device, you will have to enter the seed recovery key. Archos maintains no other way for cryptocurrencies and apps to be recovered on the device if both the pin and seed recovery backup are lost.

If your device is lost, the 24-word seed recovery key will allow you to recover the information from your device and protect your private keys. The device itself may be unhackable, but people aren’t. So keeping your seed recovery key a secret is the most important factor when protecting your digital assets.
